Where I End and You Begin
Radiohead · 2002Radiohead recorded “Where I End and You Begin” during the 2002 Hail to the Thief sessions at Ocean Way Recording in Los Angeles, after developing the song from live and rehearsal material around Colin Greenwood’s bassline and Jonny Greenwood’s Ondes Martenot part. Nigel Godrich produced the track with the band, and Darrell Thorp engineered the album sessions with Graeme Stewart assisting. Released by Parlophone and Capitol in 2003 on Hail to the Thief, the track became one of the album’s most prominent non-single songs. Its stark bass-driven structure, treated vocal and Ondes Martenot texture connected the band’s electronic-era experimentation to a more forceful live-band arrangement. The track remains a fan-recognised Hail to the Thief deep cut and a regular example of Radiohead’s early-2000s fusion of rhythm-section tension and unusual keyboard colour. Later live performances kept it visible beyond the album campaign and reinforced its status within the band’s post-Kid A repertoire.
