Recording

Apparat recorded “Black Water” during the sessions for The Devil’s Walk, with work documented at Casa Magia in Sayulita and Chez Cherie in Berlin. Sascha Ring produced and performed the core recording, with Nackt contributing production and Joshua Eustis credited with production on the track. Released by Mute in 2011 ahead of The Devil’s Walk, it introduced the album’s more song-based direction after Apparat’s earlier club and experimental electronic work. Contemporary reviews singled out “Black Water” as one of the record’s most emotive and anthemic vocal pieces. The track remains one of the central songs from The Devil’s Walk and a clear marker of Sascha Ring’s shift toward widescreen vocal songwriting. Its official video and continued prominence in Apparat’s catalogue helped make it one of the album’s most visible tracks.
