Sound and Vision
David Bowie · 1977Recording
Recorded during the Low sessions in autumn 1976, the backing track was made at Château d'Hérouville in France, with vocals and overdubs completed at Hansa Studios in West Berlin. Bowie and Tony Visconti produced, with contributions from Brian Eno and backing vocals by Mary Hopkin. As Low's lead single, it brought Bowie's experimental new direction into the UK top three. Its unusually long instrumental opening delayed the lead vocal until roughly halfway through the recording. The song supplied the name for Bowie's Sound+Vision retrospective project and 1990 tour. Beck created an expanded orchestral reinterpretation in 2013.
