Space Oddity
David Bowie · 1967Recording
David Bowie recorded the single at Trident Studios in London on 20 June 1969, with Gus Dudgeon producing. The session featured Mick Wayne on guitar, Herbie Flowers on bass, Rick Wakeman on Mellotron, and Terry Cox on drums, with string arrangements by Bowie and Paul Buckmaster. Released in 1969, it became Bowie’s breakthrough single and his first major hit. Its Apollo 11-era release and vivid space-age storytelling made it the record that introduced Major Tom and established his public identity. The track became Bowie’s signature early song and remained one of his most enduring works. Major Tom returned in later Bowie songs, and the record’s cultural reach kept expanding through reissues, broadcasts, and cover versions.
