David Bowie · 1980
Recording

Recorded between February and April 1980 at the Power Station in New York and Good Earth Studios in London. David Bowie sang lead and backing vocals alongside Robert Fripp, Carlos Alomar, George Murray, Dennis Davis and Andy Clark, with Bowie and Tony Visconti producing. Released as the second single from Scary Monsters, the song reached number five on the UK Singles Chart and number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its danceable arrangement paired with lyrics about conformity and authoritarian trendsetting made it one of Bowie's sharpest early-1980s singles. The track remains a staple of Bowie's catalogue and a defining intersection of rock, funk and post-punk production. Its David Mallet-directed video and repeated live performances reinforced its lasting cultural profile.
