Bob Dylan · 1989
Recording

The track was recorded for Oh Mercy during Bob Dylan sessions in New Orleans with producer Daniel Lanois. The album was made at Studio 89 with musicians including Mason Ruffner, Tony Hall, Brian Stoltz, Willie Green and Cyril Neville. Released on Oh Mercy in 1989, it became one of the album central songs and helped mark Dylan late 1980s critical revival. The recording was widely noted for its atmospheric production and restrained vocal performance. It remains one of Dylan most admired late 1980s recordings. The song gained further cultural visibility through its use in High Fidelity and later cover versions by other artists.
