Virginia Plain

Roxy Music · 1972
Recording

Recorded from 10 to 12 July 1972 at Command Studios in London, after Roxy Music's debut album had already been completed. The session featured Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay, Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, Paul Thompson, and bassist Rik Kenton, with Peter Sinfield producing. Released by Island Records in August 1972, Virginia Plain became Roxy Music's debut single and first major hit. It reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and introduced the band's art-school pop image to a national audience. Virginia Plain remains one of Roxy Music's signature early recordings and a defining statement of Bryan Ferry's writing and the band's electronic textures. It was later added to reissues of Roxy Music and has remained central to the group's compilations and live legacy.
