Comfortably Numb
Pink Floyd · 1979Pink Floyd recorded “Comfortably Numb” during The Wall sessions between April and November 1979, with work spread across Britannia Row, Super Bear, Studio Miraval, CBS 30th Street, Producers Workshop and Cherokee Studios. David Gilmour wrote the music, Roger Waters wrote the lyric, Bob Ezrin shaped the orchestral arrangement with Michael Kamen, and James Guthrie engineered and co-produced the recording. Released by Harvest in 1979 on The Wall, it became one of the album’s emotional and musical centrepieces. The contrast between Waters’s clinical verses, Gilmour’s expansive choruses and the celebrated guitar solos made it one of Pink Floyd’s defining late-1970s recordings. The track remains one of Pink Floyd’s most widely recognised songs and a benchmark for rock guitar performance. Its lasting reputation has been reinforced by classic-rock radio, major live versions, critical rankings and prominent later covers.
