It was cut for the Gap Band’s 1982 album Gap Band IV at Total Experience Recording Studios in Hollywood, California, with Lonnie Simmons producing the session. The track was written by Raymond Calhoun and released on Total Experience Records. Released in 1982, it became one of the group’s defining singles and reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot Black Singles chart while also crossing over to the Hot 100. Its commercial success helped make Gap Band IV the band’s most successful album era. It remains a signature Gap Band recording and a major source of hip-hop and R&B sampling, with WhoSampled listing it as sampled in more than 100 songs. Later hits such as Soul for Real’s “Every Little Thing I Do” drew directly from its groove.
