Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers · 1979Recording
Recorded in 1979 at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia with Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers and producer James Purdie. The track was cut after Brown had already worked it onstage for several years. The single broke Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers nationally and carried Washington, D.C. go-go into the wider R&B and pop market. It reached No. 1 on the R&B chart and became the group’s signature recording. The song became a defining go-go anthem and has remained one of the best-known recordings from Washington, D.C. It was later sampled in Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” and adopted as a home-run anthem by the Washington Nationals.
