Drop the Bomb

Trouble Funk · 1982
Recording

A 1982 studio recording by Trouble Funk, produced by Reo Edwards for Sugar Hill Records. The album version featured the band’s core Washington, D.C. lineup, including Tony Fisher, Robert Reed, James Avery, Emmett Nixon, Chester Davis, Mack Carey, Timothy David, David Rudd, Gerald Reed, and Taylor Reed. The track was one of Trouble Funk’s defining go-go anthems and helped make Drop the Bomb the group’s breakout Sugar Hill album. Contemporary coverage later noted that the LP went gold and that the song helped carry the band’s reputation beyond Washington, D.C. “Drop the Bomb” became a heavily sampled source record and a durable touchstone for go-go and hip-hop; WhoSampled lists it as sampled in dozens of recordings. Its hook and drum break later turned up in tracks by the Beastie Boys and other artists.
