We Are Family

Sister Sledge recorded the track at Power Station in New York City in late 1978 with Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of Chic producing and writing. Kathy Sledge sang the lead vocal for the album session, and the song was cut as part of the We Are Family album project. Released in 1979, it became Sister Sledge’s breakthrough single and one of disco’s defining anthems. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the R&B chart, turning the group into mainstream stars. The song has remained a lasting unity anthem in pop culture, sports, and activism. It was adopted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and later recognized in the Grammy Hall of Fame and the National Recording Registry.
