Mikey Dread · 1979
Recording

Recorded in Jamaica at Channel One Studio as part of the 1979 African Anthem sessions, with Mikey Dread producing, arranging, and mixing alongside his core band of Kingston session players. It is a dub version of "Step By Step." The track appeared on African Anthem, a defining 1979 Mikey Dread release on Dread at the Controls that helped codify his studio-driven dub style. It showed his practice of turning vocal songs into reworked, effects-heavy versions built for sound-system culture. "Comic Strip" became a durable sample source in later hip-hop and electronic music, including OutKast's "Wheelz of Steel." Its status as a heavily reused dub cut kept it visible long after the original release.
