Recording

Rhythm & Sound’s 2005 release was built around the See Mi Yah rhythm and cut as a classic one-rhythm project, with ten vocal versions and one instrumental. Basic Channel’s notes say Willi Williams and Sugar Minott recorded their versions in the Rhythm & Sound studio, with Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald handling the production team. The album extended the duo’s run of stripped-down reggae, dub, and electronica hybrids on Burial Mix. It was issued after a series of 7-inch pre-releases and was presented as a strictly roots one-rhythm set. See Mi Yah remains one of Rhythm & Sound’s best-known statements and sits within the Basic Channel family’s influential body of work. Basic Channel describes Ernestus and von Oswald’s Rhythm & Sound activity as pioneering and as having inspired several generations of producers.
