Spoonin' Rap

Spoonie Gee · 1979
Recording

Spoonie Gee cut his debut solo single in 1979 for Peter Brown’s Sound of New York, USA imprint, with Peter Brown credited as producer and Frank Stack as arranger. The release identified Gabriel Jackson as the writer and appeared under the shortened artist name Spoonin’ Gee on some editions. The track is one of the earliest rap records and one of Spoonie Gee’s defining early singles. Its street-level storytelling and vocal echo treatment helped establish an early model for recorded rap outside the block-party context. The record remained a touchstone of old-school hip-hop, resurfacing on reissues and compilations and being sampled by later artists. Its opening lines and phrasing kept the track in circulation as a reference point for later hip-hop production and lyricism.
