Recording

Recorded in 1987 for Audio Twos debut album What More Can I Say, the track was built by Milk Dee and Gizmo around a stripped drum pattern and direct vocal performance. The album credits list recording and mixing at I N S Studios, Such A Sound Studio and First Priority Lab. Released by First Priority Music in 1987 as the B side to Make It Funky, Top Billin became Audio Twos signature record and a defining Brooklyn rap single. Its minimal beat and deadpan opening lines made it one of the most recognizable records of the late 1980s. The track remains one of the most sampled hip hop records of its era and a permanent DJ staple. Its drum pattern and vocal phrases have been reused by major artists across rap, R and B and dance music.
