Strings of Life
Derrick May · 1987Derrick May built the track around a piano sequence by Michael James and expanded it by speeding it up, looping it, and adding percussion and string samples. The original 1987 12-inch release was issued in the United States on Transmat as a Rhythim Is Rhythim single, with editing by Stoney and executive production by Mike Slade. Released in May 1987, it became one of the defining records of Detroit techno and one of Derrick May’s best-known works. It was widely recognized as a classic in both house and techno, and it helped establish May’s reputation beyond Detroit. The track remained a touchstone for later techno and house artists and was repeatedly reworked, including a Juan Atkins remix and later reinterpretations. It has stayed in circulation through reissues, compilations, and influential cover versions, preserving its status as a foundational dance-music record.
