Hill & Gully

Johnny Osbourne · 1987
Recording

Recorded in Kingston during the mid-1980s digital dancehall era, with Johnny Osbourne voicing the song for producer Prince Jammy over the Sleng Teng rhythm. The session paired one of Jamaica's premier vocalists with the rhythm that transformed dancehall production. The single became one of the defining recordings associated with the Sleng Teng movement and further strengthened Johnny Osbourne's standing as a leading singer in dancehall. Its memorable melody and adaptation of a traditional Jamaican folk theme made it a major sound-system favourite. The track remains one of Johnny Osbourne's signature dancehall recordings and a landmark of the digital era. It continues to be celebrated through reissues, sound-system play, samples and references in reggae and dancehall culture.
