No Ice Cream Sound
Johnny Osbourne · 1992Recording
It was recorded for King Jammy’s Jammys label and built on the Real Rock riddim, placing it squarely in Jammy’s early-1990s dancehall sound-system run. The original 7-inch release is dated 1992 and credits Lloyd ‘King Jammy’ James as producer. The track functioned as a sound-system dancehall cut rather than a mainstream chart single, circulating on Jammys and later appearing on the 1995 VP compilation Mr. Budy Bye. It is identified in release databases as a classic Real Rock-based dancehall record. The song’s best-known afterlife is its use by the Beastie Boys, who sampled its vocals on "Putting Shame in Your Game." That sampling has kept the track in circulation among reggae and hip-hop listeners.
