Batty Rider

Buju Banton · 1992
Recording

It was recorded at Penthouse in Kingston for Mr. Mention, with Dave Kelly and Donovan Germain overseeing the release and Kelly among the credited engineers. The album listing also credits backing musicians including Steely & Clevie, Sly, Robert Lyn, Danny Browne, Fire House Crew, and Dean Fraser. It was one of Buju Banton’s early dancehall signatures and a standout track from the 1992 Penthouse-era Mr. Mention release. The song helped define the fast-rising profile that made Banton a major Jamaican name in the early 1990s. The track reached a much wider audience through Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, where it appears on the K-Jah West radio station. It continues to be cited as one of the defining songs from Banton’s early catalog.
