One Draw
Love Joys · 1981Love Joys recorded One Draw Sensimilla for Lloyd Barnes and the Jam Rock label in 1981, with I Topia's Sensimilla Dub issued on the same single. The duo of Sonia Abel and Claudette Brown were part of the Bronx-based Wackie's circle after moving from Brixton to New York. The track placed Love Joys on the One Draw rhythm alongside Rita Marley's better-known One Draw and linked the group to Lloyd Barnes' New York reggae network. It later opened their Wackie's album Lovers Rock Reggae Style, a cult release built around female voices in a male-dominated roots tradition. One Draw remains one of Love Joys' best-known recordings and a key entry point into their Wackie's catalogue. Its appearance in Rhythm & Sound and Wackie's reissue programmes helped bring the duo's short catalogue to later dub and reggae collectors.
