Recording

Freeez recorded Southern Freeez in 1980 at Vineyard Studios in London for the group's debut album. John Rocca produced the track, with the band lineup of Rocca, Peter Maas, Andy Stennett, and Paul Morgan joined by guest vocalist Ingrid Mansfield Allman. Southern Freeez became Freeez's breakthrough single after its 1981 Beggars Banquet release. It reached number 8 on the UK singles chart and became one of the key records of the early-1980s British dance-band scene. Southern Freeez remained Freeez's signature early record and a durable UK club classic. Later covers by Beverley Knight and Sonzeira, along with remix and reissue activity, kept the track prominent in Brit-funk retrospectives.
