Drift Away

The Rolling Stones · 1981
Recording

The track was recorded during the 1974 sessions connected to Its Only Rock n Roll with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts, with Nicky Hopkins on keyboards. The Rolling Stones version of the Mentor Williams song stayed unreleased for decades before appearing on the 2021 Tattoo You deluxe edition. Released officially in 2021 on Tattoo You Lost and Found, it documented the band outtake archive from the 1970s. The recording showed the Stones applying their mid 1970s studio sound to a song already associated with John Henry Kurtz and Dobie Gray. It remains a notable officially released Stones outtake and a documented cover from the band 1970s studio archive. The track is part of the expanded Tattoo You reissue campaign that reframed the album surrounding vault material.
