Drifting

Jimi Hendrix · 1971
Recording

Jimi Hendrix recorded and overdubbed “Drifting” at Electric Lady Studios in New York with Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums. The official Hendrix archive places the work in late June 1970, including overdubs on June 29 overseen by Eddie Kramer and second engineer Kim King. “Drifting” was part of Hendrix’s unfinished fourth-album project and first reached listeners on The Cry of Love in 1971. It showed the more reflective, fluid side of his late-period studio writing and became part of the posthumous presentation of his final work. The track remained an important piece of Hendrix’s late catalog and was later folded into First Rays of the New Rising Sun and archival reissues. It continues to be cited as one of his most lyrical studio performances.
