Stone Free
Jimi Hendrix · 1969Recorded on 2 November 1966 at De Lane Lea Studios in London during the first Jimi Hendrix Experience single session, with Jimi Hendrix on guitar and vocal, Noel Redding on bass, and Mitch Mitchell on drums. Chas Chandler produced the recording, with Dave Siddle engineering. Released in December 1966 as the B-side to Hey Joe, Stone Free was the first Hendrix composition issued on record. It introduced his own writing alongside the debut single and quickly became a regular part of the Experience's early live repertoire. Stone Free remains one of Hendrix's key early originals and a compact statement of the independence theme that ran through his work. It was later revisited in studio and became a lasting concert piece, with notable later covers by artists including Eric Clapton and The Cure.
