I'm Chief Kamanawanalea

Recorded in 1968 at Gold Star Recording Studios in Hollywood, California, for The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands. The album was produced by Chip Douglas with arrangements by The Turtles and Chip Douglas, and engineered by Jim Hilton. The track appeared on the band’s 1968 concept album, which presented each song as if performed by a different fictional act. It was part of the album’s pun-filled, multi-style format and appeared on a release issued by White Whale Records. The song remained notable as a sample source, later appearing in tracks by De La Soul, the Beastie Boys, Steady B, The Internet, and others. Its title track has kept the song in circulation through hip-hop sampling and compilations.
