Buzzsaw
The Turtles · 1968Recorded in 1968 at Gold Star Recording Studios in Hollywood for The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands, Buzzsaw features The Turtles with guest musician Lee Michaels on organ. Produced by Chip Douglas and engineered by Jim Hilton, the recording features arrangements by the band and Douglas, with Howard Kaylan, Mark Volman, Al Nichol, Jim Pons and John Barbata forming the core ensemble. Released in November 1968, Buzzsaw appeared on The Turtles' concept album The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands, which presented the group as a series of fictional bands performing contrasting musical styles. Its prominent organ, driving rhythm and instrumental emphasis demonstrated the band's versatility beyond their established chart-oriented pop recordings, and it subsequently appeared as the B-side of their hit single You Showed Me. Buzzsaw remains a distinctive recording in The Turtles' catalogue, illustrating the group's experimental approach during their late-1960s creative peak. Its inclusion on subsequent reissues of The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands has preserved the track as part of an album recognised for its inventive concept, musical diversity and playful treatment of contemporary popular music.
