The Turtles · 1968
Recording

Recorded in 1968 at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood for The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands. Chip Douglas produced and arranged the recording, slowing the Byrds composition after demonstrating it to Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman on a faulty harmonium. Released in late 1968, the single reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the Turtles' final US top-ten hit. Its slow tempo, orchestral strings and close harmonies transformed an unreleased Byrds-era song into a major pop success. The recording became the definitive version of the composition and has been covered and sampled extensively. Its use by De La Soul also became central to an early landmark dispute over unauthorized sampling.
