The Brian Jonestown Massacre · 1997
Recording

The Brian Jonestown Massacre recorded “Servo” during the Give It Back! sessions, with the guitar track filmed for Ondi Timoner’s documentary Dig!. Anton Newcombe wrote the song and produced the album with Mark Dutton, with Matt Hollywood, Jeff Davies, Peter Hayes, Joel Gion, Miranda Richards, Jussi Tegelman and Adam Hamilton among the credited personnel. Released by Bomp! in 1997 on Give It Back!, it captured the band’s volatile mid-1990s garage-psychedelic sound at the point when their rivalry with the Dandy Warhols was becoming part of their public mythology. Its churning riff and loose, confrontational performance made it one of the album’s durable live favourites. The track remains one of the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s best-known deep cuts from the Give It Back! era. Its appearance in the Dig! period and later live sets helped keep it central to the band’s cult reputation.
