Malela

The Brian Jonestown Massacre · 1997
Recording

Recorded in 1997 in Hollywood, California at Peer Music for the sessions that produced Give It Back!, after The Brian Jonestown Massacre had relocated from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The original release credits Anton Newcombe and Mark Dutton with production. “Malela” appears on Give It Back!, the band’s sixth studio album, released in 1997 on Bomp! The album was part of the group’s peak mid-1990s run and is remembered for its vintage psych-garage focus and looser, more wasted folk-rock moments. “Malela” has remained an album track rather than a chart single, but it is still cited in retrospectives on Give It Back! as one of the record’s notable cuts and part of the band’s late-1990s canon. Later coverage of the album continues to highlight the song in track-by-track discussions.
