All the Young Dudes
David Bowie · 1973Recording
David Bowie recorded the studio version during the Aladdin Sane sessions in December 1972 at RCA Studios in New York City, with Ken Scott producing. It remained unreleased for years before appearing on the 1995 compilation RarestOneBowie. The track captured Bowie revisiting one of his signature songs in a fuller studio reading after he had written it for Mott the Hoople. Its release fed interest in the Aladdin Sane-era outtakes and added another document to Bowie’s early-1970s creative peak. The song remained one of Bowie’s best-known compositions and a durable part of his live repertoire. Later live releases and numerous covers kept it in circulation well beyond its original era.
