John, I

The track was recorded in June 1972 at Trident Studios in London with David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars. Bowie and Ken Scott produced the single during the Ziggy Stardust period. Released by RCA Victor in 1972, it became a standalone UK hit during Bowie breakthrough year. The single reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart and reinforced the provocative pop identity around the Ziggy Stardust era. It remains one of Bowie key early glam era singles and one of his most discussed queer coded recordings. Later reissues and alternate versions kept the song central to Bowie 1972 catalogue.
