The Harder They Come
Jimmy Cliff · 1972Recording
Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica at Dynamic Sounds for the 1972 film soundtrack. Jimmy Cliff delivered the title track with backing by The Dynamites, and the session was tied directly to the movie’s on-screen studio sequence. The song was the soundtrack’s spearhead and became the best-known cut on the album. It captured the film’s theme of defiance and helped present reggae to listeners outside Jamaica. It became a global reggae standard and is widely remembered as the track that helped open the door for Bob Marley and other Jamaican artists abroad. Later coverage and repeated recognition kept it central to Jimmy Cliff’s reputation.
