Woman Of The Ghetto
Hortense Ellis · 1972Recording
Hortense Ellis recorded the song in Kingston at Randy’s Studio 17 with Clive Chin producing. The track was cut with Randy’s house band for the Jamaican roots-reggae scene that surrounded the Impact!/Randy’s camp. The record turned Marlena Shaw’s song into a Jamaican roots reading and became one of Hortense Ellis’s best-known releases. It also stood out as a strong female-vocal cut from Clive Chin’s Randy’s productions. The track has remained a collector favorite and a staple on Randy’s and Impact! compilations. Its arrangement has kept it in circulation among reggae reissues and DJ selections, where it is remembered as one of Ellis’s signature performances.
