Johnny Too Bad

Johnny Too Bad

The Slickers · 1970
Recording

Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica in 1970 with the Slickers lineup centered on Derrick Crooks and including Abraham Green, who handled the lead vocal on the track. The single was produced by Byron Lee. The song became the Slickers’ signature recording and a key selection on the soundtrack to The Harder They Come, where it helped define the film’s rude-boy atmosphere. Its blunt street lyric and memorable chorus made it one of the early reggae tracks most associated with the genre’s international breakout. Johnny Too Bad remained a reggae standard through its soundtrack status and later versions by artists including Taj Mahal, UB40, John Martyn, and others. It is still cited as one of the foundational songs that carried Jamaican music to wider global audiences.
