African Herbsman
Bob Marley & The Wailers · 1970It was recorded in February 1971 by Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Carlton Barrett, Aston Barrett, Alva Reggie Lewis, and Glen Adams at Randy's Studio 17 in Kingston on 4-track tape. Errol Thompson engineered the session and Lee "Scratch" Perry produced it. The track came from the classic Perry-era Wailers sessions and first appeared on the Jamaican release of Soul Revolution Part II, where it was misspelled as "African Herbman." It captured the group in the midst of its early roots-reggae development and became one of the key songs from that period. It remained part of the Lee Perry/Wailers canon and was later included on Trojan's African Herbsman compilation. The song continued to circulate through reissues and later Marley-related releases, keeping the early Perry sessions in the core Marley catalog.
