Recorded in 1970 during the Loaded sessions in New York City, with the Velvet Underground lineup of Lou Reed, Doug Yule, Sterling Morrison, and Moe Tucker. The track was cut at Atlantic Recording Studios under the supervision of Geoff Haslam and Shel Kagan. It served as the closing statement of Loaded and became one of the band's signature songs. Its optimistic, radio-friendly framing of rock history contrasted with the group’s earlier art-rock reputation and helped make the album more accessible.
