Sweet Jane
The Velvet Underground · 1969Recording
Recorded during the Loaded sessions at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York City in 1970, with Geoffrey Haslam and Shel Kagan overseeing production and the Velvet Underground heavily involved in shaping the arrangement. Doug Yule handled much of the instrumental backing on the released version. Released as one of the key songs from Loaded, it marked the band’s move toward streamlined rock and became one of their best-known recordings. It helped define the album’s more accessible, radio-minded direction. The track became a staple of the Velvet Underground catalog and one of Lou Reed’s signature songs after the band. It has been widely covered and remains a touchstone for later indie and rock artists.
