Light My Fire

Erma Franklin · 1969
Recording

Recorded for Brunswick’s 1969 Soul Sister album in Chicago. The session was helmed by Carl Davis and Sonny Sanders, with Johnny Pate and Willie Henderson among the Chicago collaborators associated with the record. The track recast the Doors song as a hard-hitting late-1960s soul cut and helped define Soul Sister’s tougher Chicago sound. It has been singled out as one of the album’s choice cuts and one of Erma Franklin’s standout covers. The recording has endured as a cult deep-soul favorite and was later reissued on select compilations and vinyl singles. It was also sampled by Jamalski on “No Murder,” extending its reach into hip-hop.
