Do Me

Jean Knight · 1972
Recording

Recorded at Malaco Studios in Jackson, Mississippi, Do Me featured New Orleans singer Jean Knight working with producer and arranger Wardell Quezergue. The sessions drew on Malaco's studio musicians, including guitarist Jerry Puckett, bassist Vernie Robbins and drummer James Stroud, with the composition credited to Albert Savoy and Quezergue. Released as a Stax single in late 1972, Do Me followed Knight's breakthrough success with Mr. Big Stuff and continued her collaboration with Wardell Quezergue. A January 1973 Record World review praised its tight rhythm section, suggestive lyrics and production, identifying it as a strong continuation of her established sound. Do Me remains part of Jean Knight's Stax-era catalogue and was included in the expanded edition of her album Mr. Big Stuff. Its preservation through the label's reissue programme documents Knight's work with the distinctive New Orleans and Malaco production sound beyond her best-known hit.
