Voodoo Child
Jimi Hendrix · 1968Recording
The track was recorded on May 3, 1968, at the Record Plant in New York City by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, with Jimi Hendrix, Noel Redding, and Mitch Mitchell. It followed the previous day’s studio jam “Voodoo Chile,” which set up the song’s title and arrangement. Released as the closing track on Electric Ladyland in 1968, it captured Hendrix at full strength in a tightly focused studio performance. It became one of his signature recordings and a defining statement of his guitar approach. The song remained one of Hendrix’s most covered and cited performances, with major versions by artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan helping keep it in circulation. Its riff and solo vocabulary became a touchstone for later rock and blues guitarists.
