Bob Marley & The Wailers · 1977
Recording

Recorded in London in 1977 during the Exodus sessions, after Bob Marley left Jamaica following the 1976 assassination attempt. The track was cut with Bob Marley & The Wailers, with the sessions centered at Island’s London facilities. It was one of the standout songs on Exodus, the album that carried Marley to a wider international audience. The song became one of the record’s defining statements of calm, momentum, and collective uplift. It remained one of Marley’s signature songs and a staple of later live releases and compilations, including Legend and Babylon by Bus. Its refrain and feel have kept it central to Marley’s popular reputation for decades.
