Commodores · 1977
Recording

Recorded in 1976–77 at Motown’s own studio in Hollywood, California, during sessions for the Commodores album. The track was cut by the full six-member band, with James Anthony Carmichael producing alongside the Commodores and Jane Clark and Cal Harris engineering the album sessions. Released in 1977, the single became a Top 5 pop hit and helped confirm the Commodores as one of Motown’s biggest crossover acts. Walter Orange’s lead vocal and the song’s hard-driving groove made it one of the group’s defining funk statements. It remains one of the Commodores’ signature songs and a durable funk standard. The track has stayed in circulation through live performances, compilations, samples, and covers, keeping it prominent in popular culture.
