Althea & Donna · 1977
Recording

Althea & Donna recorded the single in Kingston, Jamaica, at Joe Gibbs’ studio in Cross Roads, with Joe Gibbs producing and Errol Thompson involved as writer/engineer on the original release. The track was cut from the same Jamaican reggae tradition as Trinity’s “Three Piece Suit” and Alton Ellis’s “I’m Still in Love.” Released in 1977, it became a surprise UK number one and stayed on the Official Singles Chart for 11 weeks. Early support from BBC Radio 1’s John Peel helped turn it into a breakout hit for the teenage duo. The song remains one of reggae’s best-known crossover hits and a lasting one-hit-wonder touchstone in UK pop culture. It was sampled by Abs on the 2002 single “What You Got,” extending its reach into later mainstream pop.
