Recording

Recorded in Los Angeles by Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, the track was produced during sessions for the album of the same name. Wright led the group as songwriter, arranger and bandleader, combining funk grooves with socially conscious themes and strong ensemble musicianship. Released in 1970, the song became the group's signature hit and a defining statement of self-expression during a period of cultural and political change in the United States. Its uplifting message and infectious groove helped it cross over to both pop and R&B audiences. The recording became one of the most sampled tracks in funk history and has influenced generations of hip-hop, soul and dance music artists. Its message and groove remain widely recognized through samples, covers and continued use in film, television and advertising.
