Bold Soul Sister
Ike & Tina Turner · 1969Recorded in 1969 for The Hunter with Albert Collins on blues guitar and Ike Turner on piano; Collins later recalled that the track was cut in a straight studio session with no overdubs. The original release paired it as the B-side of “I Know” on Blue Thumb Records. The song became the breakout B-side from The Hunter, moving from Bubbling Under to the Billboard Hot 100 after the duo promoted it on The Ed Sullivan Show in January 1970. It also reached No. 22 on Billboard’s soul chart, giving the album one of its strongest commercial moments. The track stayed in circulation through later compilations and became a sample source for hip-hop and electronic acts, including Main Source, Lakim Shabazz, Gramatik, and Poizon Posse feat. Sweet Tee. Its riffing and vocal phrasing kept it a reference point for later funk-and-soul sampling.
