Band of Gold

Marcia Griffiths · 1970
Recording

Marcia Griffiths recorded the song in Jamaica for Harry J Records, with producer Harry Johnson overseeing the session. It was released as a 7-inch single backed with "Stay Right Here." The track turned Freda Payne’s 1970 soul hit into a reggae cut during Griffiths’ early-1970s Harry J period. It reinforced her reputation for handling pop and soul material with a distinctly Jamaican feel. The recording remains one of Griffiths’ best-known cover versions and is regularly cited in retrospectives of her catalog. It continues to circulate on reissue compilations and digital releases as a favorite early-reggae performance.
