Are You My Woman

Chi-Ites · 1970
Recording

It was cut in Chicago for Brunswick during the sessions that produced I Like Your Lovin' (Do You Like Mine?), with Eugene Record and Carl Davis credited on the recordings. The track was recorded at Universal Recording Studios with Willie Henderson and Quinton Joseph overseeing the sessions. Released in 1970, it kept the Chi-Lites visible on the national soul circuit and reached Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 at No. 101. It became one of the standout songs from the group's Brunswick period before their bigger 1971 and 1972 crossover hits. The song's horn riff became one of the most recognizable samples in modern R&B after Beyoncé built 'Crazy in Love' around it. That use turned the track into a lasting reference point for Chicago soul and sample culture.
