Edwin Starr · 1970
Recording

Issued on Gordy in January 1970, the track was written by Edwin Starr and Richard Wylie and credited on the single to Starr as producer, with Wade Marcus as arranger. It marked Starr’s early Motown-era follow-up to his 1969 breakthrough period and became one of the records that helped establish him on the northern soul scene. Later biographical coverage cites it as a key step in building that reputation. The song remained a northern soul favorite and stayed associated with Starr’s Motown catalog long after its release. Collector and chart-history sources continue to document it as a notable 1970 single from the early Gordy period.
