Comin Home Baby
Mel Tormé · 1962Recording
Mel Tormé cut the song in 1962 during the Atlantic sessions for Comin' Home Baby!, recorded between July 11 and September 13, 1962 in New York. Nesuhi Ertegun supervised the release, with Claus Ogerman credited for the arrangement and Bones Howe and Tom Dowd among the recording engineers. The single turned an obscured Ben Tucker instrumental into a vocal pop hit for Tormé and became his biggest commercial success of the period. It gave Atlantic a crossover jazz-pop hit and brought Tormé into the Billboard Hot 100 top 40. The recording remains Tormé's signature hit and the version most associated with the song. Its success helped establish the tune as a jazz standard, and it has been covered by many later artists.
